St. George Continued - Historic Homes

St. George has some great historical sights to see. Right across the street from our bed & breakfast was the St. George Tabernacle. It was built for both church purposes and also to house community activities. The first historic home we toured was the Jacob Hamblin home. He did a lot to settle many areas and better relationships with the Native Americans in many areas of the country, including the St. George area. He's also in the cowboy hall of fame for the most miles ridden on horseback. Here's the house. They plant a small garden to show some of the things they grew in the area like cotton and grapes. Here are some newly budding grapes.

Here are my parents in the garden.Next we toured Brigham Young's (the 2nd LDS prophet & president of the church) Summer Home. It's so cute and had beautiful gardens. I wanted to live there.

Who wouldn't want this walk up to their front door.

One thing that was amazing was all the things in the house that were made of pine, but painted to look like something else that wasn't possible for them to get there at that time. This fireplace mantle is pine wood painted to look like granite. This hat was in Brigham Young's wife's room. I just loved it. I swear I was born in the wrong era.

This is Brigham Young's bed. The stool by the bed could have been used to help him get into bed, but as we were talking to the guide we came to the conclusion that it was just the right size for one to kneel on to pray. I thought that was a cool thought considering this was a prophet.

This is what they call a "mormon couch". The legs on the bottom come out and it turns into a bed. Also the thing on the top that looks like a rolling pin, was used to beat the mattresses to get the bugs out & roll across the bed to smooth it out. They were so inventive.

I love all this history.
