Yesterday (Dec 8th) was my Mom's birthday. We wanted to do something special, but with her being on the other side of the world we just couldn't think of something good enough. Thanks to a wonderful friend of my parents, Alan Swensen, who came up with a wonderful plan to make it a big day for us all. He wrote a note and brought it to each of my parents' 6 children (he even had a family member in Utah take one to my brother Ryan's house in Draper, UT), along with a cake for each family so that we could all celebrate Grammy's birthday. Here's the note.

Here's Alan Swensen giving the cake to Jameson. He spent the whole day braving the rain, and driving all over the east valley to personally deliver a cake, note & candles for the cake to each family. What a wonderful friend.

Here is the beautiful, and even more amazingly delicious cake.

Because the Congo is 9 hours ahead of us Alan even thought enough to be sure we got the cakes on Mon, Dec. 7th so that we would have it when Grammy's birthday started for her. We decided Grammy needed to wake up to some one singing Happy Birthday to her (a family tradition) so we all stayed up late (Alex tried but didn't quite make it) and finally got her on Skype at 9:30pm our time just as she was starting her day in Lubumbashi. We pulled out the cake with a candle on it and Jameson sang an adorable version of Happy Birthday and then blew the candle out for her while she pretended to blow it out. She totally cried :) but we think that she was happy. We shared the story of the wonderful service their friend had done, and she cried again :)
We were all so touched by this wonderful act of service and were so happy we were able to celebrate with our Grammy in such a special way. Thank you, Thank you to Alan Swensen.
We hope you had a wonderful birthday Grammy. We love you!

What a sweet story.
Holy cow - that is the sweetest thing I've ever heard!! How special...
That is so neat! What an awesome friend to do that for your family. That cake looks deadly and delicious at the same time.
How neat...and even {neater?}..I seriously know him from somewhere...what does he do for a living? I am thinking he managed/rented Dr. Morales' office to us when I worked there...small world. :)
